Welcome to the Wachter Guidance Office Site
The primary goal of the counseling program is the personal development of the individual. By helping students explore available options and the possible outcomes resulting from these options, the counselors will help students feel more confident in making decisions concerning their development:- Personally
- Academically
- Socially
The counselors will use individual and group counseling while endeavoring to promote personal growth by (1) helping the student understand and accept himself/herself as an individual by developing an awareness of unique ideas, feelings, values and needs in a complex society, (2) furnishing various forms of information and resources to deal with a particular student's educational needs , and (3) providing an opportunity to learn how to interact positively with fellow students through communication, listening, understanding and accepting others.
The Guidance Counselors work directly with the faculty, students, and the students' parents/guardians to facilitate academic success and personal development of the students at Wachter Middle School.

A 1994 graduate of UND, Mrs. Butts has spent the past 12 years in education. From 1994-2000 Mrs. Butts was a member of the Moorhead (MN) Junior High Staff first as a Geography teacher (1995-1999) and then as a counselor (1999-2000). In the fall of 2001 Mrs. Butts joined the staff of Bismarck High where she taught both Psychology and Advanced Placement Psycholgy for the past 6 years. Mrs. Butts has Masters Degrees from NDSU in Counseling (1997) and in Educational Administration (2004).

Dr. Schmeling has been a counselor at Wachter Middle School since 1998. Prior to coming to WMS she worked at Riverside and Rita Murphy Elementary Schools in Bismarck as an elementary counselor. She had additional experience as a teacher and counselor from Moorhead High School, University of Mary, and United Tribes Technical College/Theodore Jamerson Elementary School. Dr. Schmeling has a bachelor and masters degree from NDSU and a Ph.D. in Education Leadership from UND.
